Celebrating the life of
Paul Francis Jurgensen, MD
June 21, 1938 - October 20, 2016
SAVANNAH – Paul F. Jurgensen, M.D. died peacefully in his home on October 20, 2016 in the presence of his loving wife Diane. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a friend to many around the world.
Paul was born on June 21, 1938 in Savannah, Georgia to the late Mildred Barrett and Paul F. Jurgensen. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, Benedictine Military School, Spring Hill College in Mobile Alabama, and St Louis University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri.
On July 17, 1963, Paul married Diane Marie Zinn, of Ft Lauderdale Florida. They moved to Savannah where they raised their family and made many lifelong friends.
Paul graduated from the St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1964, magna cum laude and was accepted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society. He served an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at St. Louis University Hospitals 1964–1968. During this time, he received the G.O. Broun Sr. Award for Outstanding Achievement in Internal Medicine. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Subspecialty Board of Infectious Diseases. Upon completion of his residency, he served in the United States Navy at the Naval Hospital in Beaufort South Carolina (1968–1970) and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander, Medical Corps, USNR. While taking care of active and retired members of the military, he contributed to the medical literature on acute renal failure and heat stress in military recruits at Parris Island. Following his military service, he undertook a Fellowship in Infectious diseases at the University of Florida College of Medicine where he studied the immune response to influenza viruses.
In 1971, he joined Dr. Lamont Danzig, Dr. Murray Arkin & Dr. Robert DiBenedetto at Paulsen Square Medical Associates as an internist and the first infectious disease specialist in southeast Georgia. This group subsequently enlarged and became Eisenhower Medical Associates until 1996 when he then joined the Memorial Medical Associates and retired in 2001. His hospital affiliations included Attending Physician at Memorial, Consulting Staff at St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System. He served as chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at Memorial in1978 and was a member of the Executive Committee.
Upon his arrival in Savannah, his advanced knowledge caused Memorial Medical to make extreme strides in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases and hospital acquired infections. He established one of the first Infection Control Departments in the United States and remained as director from 1971 to 2001.He also served as Consultant in Infectious Diseases to the Department of Pathology at Memorial. His efforts in infectious diseases culminated in his selection as the first private practitioner to be selected as a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America in 1975. He was a member of many professional societies and was a Fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
Paul had a passion for teaching medicine to students and residents. This resulted in his appointment as Clinical Professor of Medicine at both the University of Florida and the Medical College of Georgia. Most recently, he taught Immunology and Genetics at the Savannah campus of the Mercer College of Medicine and was a member of the full-time faculty of the Internal Medicine Department at Memorial. He was the recipient of many “Outstanding Teacher” awards. He was a member of the Georgia Medical Society and served as President in 1997. Paul received several awards from the Medical Society for outstanding humanitarian and community service including the “Heroes of Medicine” award for his efforts in HIV care and education and the Doctor John S. Rabun Community Service Award for outstanding community service. Paul was awarded the Jack A. Raines, M.D. Award for Outstanding Humanitarian Service by the Medical Association of Georgia in 2004. Paul was presented “Clinical Preceptor of the Year” award by The South University class of 2015 for his dedication to the program and excellence in clinical preceptorship.
His greatest contribution to Savannah and the surrounding area was his untiring efforts in delivering patient care during the AIDS epidemic. He was the leader in providing this care to all comers including the indigent population. His efforts at educating both the medical and lay population as to the dangers and intricacies of diagnosis and treatment of this disease occupied much of his time during the 1980s and 90s. He was a member of numerous Task Forces on AIDS. His efforts resulted in recognition by the National Institute of Health when he was designated an Infectious Disease Society of America / Pfizer Fellow in Infectious Diseases in 1997.
He also contributed significantly to medical literature with numerous research and clinical articles in peer-reviewed medical journals.
In addition to his contributions to medicine, Paul has lectured throughout Savannah on Irish and German history, Civil War and World War II history. Paul served as Benedictine Military School’s football physician for 20 years. In 1975 he was recognized “The Man of the Year” by Benedictine Athletic Association and in 1980 he received the Medal of Excellence award from the Benedictine Fathers. Paul loved and supported Georgia Tech. Paul was actively involved in Spring Hill College and was awarded the Stephen Karopczyk Award for Outstanding Service to Spring Hill College in 1985 and the Ignatian Award for Outstanding Humanitarian Service in 1996.
Paul served as the Past President of Hibernian Society of and past President of The German Heritage Society. He is past President and served for 50 years as The Surgeon General of the Sein Fein Society. He was a member of The Downtown Rotary Club of Savannah, German Friendly Society, St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Sons of Confederate Veterans, The Savannah Grays Civil War Roundtable, The Landings Marines, and promoted the Georgia Southern Center of Irish Studies in Savannah. In 1983, Paul led the effort to dedicate the Celtic Cross of Irish limestone from the County of Roscommon, in West Ireland, to honor Savannahians of Irish descent, a reminder that their history was one of religion as much as it was about “hard work, suffering and endurance.” The monument faces Bay Street in Emmet Park, and every year a wreath is laid at its pedestal, and a ceremony takes place the Sunday prior to St. Patrick’s Day.
Beyond Paul’s many professional and civic contributions, he loved his country, the people that defend our country, his catholic faith, the sanctity of life, his Southern heritage and his primary passion in life was his family. Nothing was more important to Paul than being with, laughing with, and fully participating in his families lives.
Paul is survived by his wife of 53 years, Diane and his four children and their spouses: Margaret and Kevin Mooney, Lisa and Paul Jurgensen, Stephen Jurgensen, and Neil Jurgensen. He is also survived by his 6 grandchildren: Caitlin Mooney, Brendan Mooney, John Mooney, Daniel Jurgensen, Julianne Jurgensen and Matthew Jurgensen and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
In addition, Paul is survived by his brothers and sisters in law John and Sandy Jurgensen, Joe & Mary Louise Jurgensen and sister and brother in law Judy and Donald Melroy.
The Jurgensen family would like to thank all those that have assisted Paul during these last few months of illness, especially, Dr. Benjamin Watson, Dr. Joe Hogan, the nurses of Memorial Hospital and Spanish Oaks Hospice, and their trusted friend and caregiver Lucy Reid.

I’ve never forgotten Dr. Jurgensen’s kindness when he was my doctor before we moved to N,C. He even expressed concern about my tendency to develop bronchitis and pneumonia and our move to Boone in the mountains. He was a role model for relaying a sense of caring to his patients. What a marvelous man.
- Mrs RICHARD (Barbara) Haunton, Hickory, NC,
I wish I had known him better, but I have fond memories of the day Dr. Jurgensen came to my home to walk me through the process when I began helping the Hibernian Society with invitations to the annual St. Patrick's Day dinner. Patient, thorough, meticulous, and clear, he explained everything in full detail and conveyed to me the importance of doing things properly and well. I imagine it was the same way he practiced medicine, taught his classes, counseled his sons, and conducted his personal affairs. I already knew him to be a highly accomplished person, but I learned that day what an excellent gentleman he was. May his memory be eternal, and may God comfort you all with happy memories.

Doctor Paul Jurgensen was a physician's physician, a true gentleman, and a scholar. He loved Medicine, and he loved History. I particularly delighted in hearing Paul daily pontificate in the Memorial Doctors' Lounge during lunch about whatever was the particular topic of the day happened to be. He was always captivating and well-informed. I especially enjoyed hearing Paul talk about the "War of Northern Aggression", aka, "The Civil War", a period in American History about which he was extremely well-versed. Paul Jurgensen was the consummate physician, a loyal friend to his colleagues, and one who always put the welfare of his patients above all else. He was a pioneer in the field of Infectious Disease and a great inspiration to me as a younger physician. I will miss him. Rest eternal grant unto him O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. May he Rest In Peace. Amen.

I had the honor and privilege of working with Dr. Jurgensen in Infection Control at MMC in the eighties. He was a brilliant physician and teacher as well as a friend. Our friendship developed as a result of not only working together but by being parents of sons who played together on the BC Football team. Steve was at our house often after Friday night football games along with several others who spent the next day in the river skiing. Our Monday morning discussion of the previous Friday nights game was always enjoyable. He was a kind, caring, Christian, MD, husband, father and friend and will be greatly missed. Will keep the family in our prayers.

Dr. Jurgensen was my husband's physician until he retired from his medical practice, and both of us give him credit for Charles' good health today. After being treated unsuccessfully by another doctor for more than a year, Charles was referred to Dr. Jurgensen. In the first 10 minutes of the initial visit, Dr. Jurgensen was able to give a preliminary diagnosis which proved to be correct after further tests. Needless to say, Charles was a patient until Dr. Jurgensen retired. Then, in 1999, Dr. Jurgensen diagnosed Charles with adenocarcinoma of the lung. His thorough annual examinations revealed this condition before it had metastasized. No chemo or radiation was required--just removal of one lobe of the lung. Today, Charles is an 88-year-old, fairly healthy senior citizen, and we give Dr. Jurgensen much credit for this. You will never know how much he meant to our family throughout the time Charles was his patient. Not only was he an excellent physician, he was a kind, compassionate, Christian gentleman. We feel very blessed to have known him, and the medical community and all of us have lost a great man. Our sincere sympathy to the family.
- Charles and Glenda Edwards, Claxton, GA
There are very few people whom I consider to be heroic in my eyes, but Dr. Jurgenson is one of them. He saved my father's life in 1973 when he contracted a staph infection. He took time to attend both my mother and father's funeral when they passed away. In 1999 he was the physician who diagnosed the cancer which I had contracted. His influence in the community of Savannah is immeasurable, and he will be greatly missed.
- Ed Davis, Brooklet, GA

Amen.

Paul Jurgensen was great friends with Tony Walsh (my dad), and his brothers growing up in Savannah. When Dad would talk about that time and adventures with ‘Jug,’ his whole face would light up. I imagine that now the two of them will meet up in the afterlife and reminisce. My condolences to his family and friends.
